On Monday I was at my mom's house alone with Jack having a totally normal day. After his morning nap he woke up and ate lunch as usual and then we went up front while I worked on something and he sat in his bouncy chair playing with a book. One minute I looked at him and he was fine then I heard this weird crying noise. I looked at him and I could tell something was not right.
I picked him up and the crying/moaning noise continued and he was very limp, letting his head fall back. I called my mom and changed his diaper and thought maybe he just needed to have a bottle. The 10 feet from where I changed him to the rocking chair somthing changed in him and I knew something bad was happening. I called his Dr. and attempted to feed him a bottle. It was while I was on the phone with him that he had his seizure. I did not know he was having one though. Apparently there are two kinds, one where the person or child is thrashing quickly and one that is almost in slow motion. Jack's was in slow motion.
At this point I was hysterical and the nurse was telling me to have someone drive me to the hospital. I called my sister-in-law, Khala who lives around the corner and I don't even know if she knew why she was coming over. I loaded Jack and as much things as I could think of in the car while khala came over. Jack was like a rag doll in my arms.
The very worst moment in my life was the 15 minute drive to the hospital. Remember, I didn't know he had a seizure all I knew was that he was acting weird and eyes rolling in the back of his head. While Khala drove like a mad woman, Jack seemed to be going in and out of conscience. I was hysterical. Shaking him and yelling at him. He would not stay awake or alert. I thought the worst. I can not describe those 15 minutes. All I wanted was for that baby to keep looking at me and he couldn't.
Come to find out after a seizure your brain is EXHAUSTED. NOW if it ever happened again I would let him sleep. He had a CAT scan and that was normal. There are no answers yet but we have an EEG scheduled for next Wednesday and that should at least tell me if he will be prone to more.
He is acting totally fine now but I will say mommy and daddy are still super worried. I still don't think it has hit me yet. I was hysterical until the moment I walked in that hospital. Then mommy mode hit me. I still can't believe that my son had a seizure and those horrible 15 minutes.
Here is Jack and I asleep at the hospital. They had just tried 5 times to get blood and the only way to calm him down was for me to lay and sing to him.
This was Jack on a stretcher in the ambulance on the way to Texas Children's Hospital. I think he thought the ambulance was cool!
Waiting and waiting and waiting at Texas Children's Hospital.....
The ceiling tiles in the ER rooms are painted by children. After about 2 hours of waiting Kenny noticed that one of them was painted by a SEAS student that I taught a couple years ago. Sign? I think so!
